For decades the Marquês de Sapucaí Sambadrome has been the home of Rio de Janeiro’s carnival celebrations, with as many as 90?000 spectators paying to watch the parades.

This year, with the pandemic forcing the cancellation of the carnival, the site became a blaze of colour to commemorate the more than 241?000 people who have died in Brazil with covid-19—the second highest total in the world, behind the US.

Brazil has recorded almost 10 million cases.
