The three components of your training program

Every time we step foot in the gym, we should be focusing on a variety of things that will better help our overall health and fitness.  I know most of you want to get it, work hard and go home, but the truth of the matter is the actual workout is only a very small part of the equation.  For one, we know that the quickest path towards success is putting good nutrition into your body.  This directly affects your workouts, energy in and out of the gym, performance on a day to day basis in and out of the gym and should be number #1 on your list of priorities.

The second component of your training program should be focused on flexibility and mobility.  To have healthy joints and freely moving muscles is a great feeling.  Focus on finding those sticky areas that are problematic and then attack it with the same zeal that you do in your workouts.  A good reference is to visit the Mobility WOD and educate yourself on what works for you.  A good rule of thumb is to get your body warmed up with some general movement specific to your workout and also incorporate 5-10 minutes of mobility on that specific area of focus prior to your actual work portion of the hour.  Once done with the work capacity portion, a good 5-10 minute cool down is essential for your success.  This component is an overlooked part of training but should be a top priority.

The third component of your training program should be focused on the work portion.  This is where you put the petal to the metal so to speak.  Focus on form and quality over quantity.  Understand your positions and technique prior to adding more weight and speed.  Focusing on nutrition and mobility will directly affect your performance in your actual work portion of the workout.  No more than 3 days in a row should be in your weekly program.
